Gabriel Poliquin

Gabriel is an experienced legal counsel and litigator, having worked for the past decade in a national law firm in Montreal and in a civil litigation boutique in Ottawa. In 2010-2011, Gabriel was law clerk to Mr. Justice Louis LeBel at the Supreme Court of Canada. Gabriel holds a doctorate in linguistics from Harvard University, where he did research in Chinese syntax and French Canadian phonology. When not acting in public or commercial law matters, Gabriel teaches private international law as a lecturer at the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Law.

Experience

Counsel work in trials and appeals as well as in cases with a political angle.

 

Civil litigation experience in a wide variety of private law matters. Gabriel represents individuals and businesses in commercial, employment and professional negligence litigation. Gabriel has also worked on land use planning and professional discipline matters.

Public law experience in many administrative and constitutional law cases, in particular language rights issues, issues related to judicial independence and ethics as well as issues relating to freedom of expression. Gabriel has a wealth of experience as a legal advisor to organizations and associations of minority Francophone communities.

 

Legal writing, teaching and speaking as the author of peer-reviewed articles and as lecturer in private international law at the Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa. Gabriel is regularly invited as a speaker on language rights issues.
